What You Will Learn
Program Overview
The Accounting Technician program at Alberta Paramount College is a 62 week full time post secondary program. Designed to provide you with the skills required to manage accounting and taxation responsibilities. As well as handling financial information, financial documents, and financial reporting.
You can use these skills in small businesses or in larger enterprises. Where you can contribute to functions like bookkeeping, Accounts Receivable and Payable, GST, Payroll, or taxation, supporting senior Accountants.
A key part of this program is a 160 hour practicum. Which offers hands-on experience in applying your acquired skill set and familiarizing you with real-world work experience. This practical exposure is instrumental in building confidence and readiness to operate as a professional in the accounting field.
Courses
Microsoft Office Suite: This course will provide you with a overview of the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. The course will cover the basic features and functions of each program. As well as more advanced techniques for creating professional documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and emails.
Financial Accounting II: A course that covers advanced accounting topics such as partnerships, corporations, statement of cash flows, and financial statement analysis. Designed to provide you with a solid understanding of financial accounting principles and practices. Students will also learn how to analyze financial data and make informed business decisions based on their findings.
Payroll Compliance Legislation: Upon completion of this course you will know the payroll compliance responsibilities that affect organizations. Be able to comprehend payroll legislation, and be able to effectively communicate these to all stakeholders. This course will provide students with the payroll related legislation affecting organizations. Tools to find information and apply that information to different scenarios in relation to individual pay. Our programs will prepare you to manage compliance requirements, deliver reliable payroll information and contribute valuable insights.
Microsoft Excel – Advanced: This course will provide you with advanced skills needed to effectively use Excel in your daily work. Covering a wide range of topics including advanced formulas and functions, data analysis tools, pivot tables, macros and more. Through hands-on exercises and real-world examples, you will learn how to streamline workflow. This will save time, and improve your accuracy when working with financial data.
Accounting Software Systems: QuickBooks Online & Sage 50 Accounting You will learn to maintain the financial records of a small business using accounting software. You will build on the skills acquired in prior financial accounting courses. To gain solid technical knowledge of contemporary and advanced financial accounting and reporting issues. This course covers: accounts payable accounts receivable payables and receivables setup payroll journal and setup inventory transactions orders quotes and deposits currencies and remittances project allocations reconciling bank and deposits comprehensive setup
Payroll Fundamentals I: Upon completion of Payroll Fundamentals l, students will be able to calculate regular individual net pay, non-regular individual pay, and termination payments. You will learn how to calculate a Record of Employment (ROE). Communicate all aspects of individual pay requirements to various stakeholders.
Financial Accounting I: An intro course designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of financial accounting principles and concepts. Through lectures, discussions, and practical exercises, you will learn how to prepare, analyze, and interpret financial statements. The course covers the accounting cycle, from recording transactions to preparing reports and financial statements. Special attention is placed on the balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows. You will gain a solid understanding of financial accounting and will be able to handle real-world situations.
Income Taxation: Students will be provided with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of federal income taxation in Canada. Students will develop an understandings to identify, analyze, and apply the tax law to a wide range of subjects. Ranging from determining the income tax liability or refund of individuals earning employment income. Carrying on a business, earning investment income. Identifying potential income tax benefits directed at students. You will learn how to invest in Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs). Understand how the income tax law applies to corporations, trusts, and partnerships. You will have a overview of the Canadian tax system and its application to individuals and businesses.
Payroll Fundamentals II: You will be able to calculate and report the government and third-party remittances. Year-end requirements, discuss payroll technology solutions and account for payroll at the compliance level for the organization. You will be able to effectively communicate these organizational processes and requirements to internal and external stakeholders.
Job Search and Resume Writing: This course is designed to guide students through the process of job searching and resume writing. The course will cover various methods of finding job opportunities, including online job boards, networking, and informational interviews. Students will learn how to create a professional resume that effectively showcases their skills and experiences to potential employers. You will to write an effective cover letter that grabs the attention of recruiters and hiring managers. You will cover interview skills, including how to make a strong first impression, appropriate behavior and dress. How to communicate effectively, and body language.
