Program Overview
The medical office assistant and unit clerk program is designed to help you succeed in a variety of positions in a medical office. During this 46 week post secondary program, you will gain knowledge and skills in medical transcription, billing and accounting, Medical EMR, medical terminology, and more!
This program includes a 160 hour practicum. During your practicum, you work to gain real-world experience in your chosen field. This helps boost your confidence and skills as a healthcare professional.
Courses
Microsoft Office Suite: This course will prepare you to be efficient in using Microsoft Office applications. These are essential in every medical office or hospital setting. During this time the students will also be working to improve their keyboarding.
Infection Control and Health Care Basics: This course covers the concepts of health and safety. It details strategies about Infection control and disease prevention. It also covers nosocomial infections and how to prevent them. You will receive an introduction to the chain of infection and modes of transmission. We discuss in detail the role of an Administrative Health Professional (AHP) in storing and handling vaccines. As well as in sanitization, sterilization, and asepsis.
Communication and Reception duties: This course covers the different methods of communication in a medical office. Clear, courteous and professional communication over the phone is important.
Health Information Law: This course will introduce you to the composition of health charts. We discuss the various health record documents and their management. Introduce the legal aspects of a health chart and privacy legislation, and emphasize the importance of confidentiality. We will discuss the various components of a medical chart in detail. Including PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act) and HIA (Health Information Act).
Medical EMR: You will learn Electronic Medical Records (EMR) software. We thoroughly explain computerized documentation. Students will be prepared to work in a computerized environment.
Medical Terminology: This course introduces you to Anatomy and Physiology. You will learn terminology from a cellular level to detailed structures including all the body systems and functions. The purpose of this course is to prepare you to work in a health care environment. You will learn medical terminology to understand the language of the healthcare team. A clear understanding of medical words is vital to ensure good communication with the healthcare team members. The study of Pharmacology equips you with knowledge about medications, their uses, side effects and mode of action.
Office Procedures: This course highlights the most important role of an administrative health professional in a medical office setting. Which is appointment scheduling, both manual and electronic. This course covers several appointment booking styles and their advantages and disadvantages. We also discuss how to manage booking specialist appointments and diagnostic tests.
Billing and Accounting: We will introduce you to healthcare plans, health cards, and the importance of validating health cards. The course will highlight insured and uninsured services. This course will also provide an introduction to the way health care bills are handled by the Ministry of Health. You will learn how to submit claims and follow the billing cycle. We discuss different types of claims, such as reciprocal claims, workers' compensation boards, and healthcare plans.
Role and Ethics of Administrative Health Professional: This Course highlights the dynamic and vital role of an Administrative Health Professional (AHP). We explain the evolving role of the administrative health professional in detail. Focus on identifying the skills and desirable attributes of AHPs. We highlight the importance of a positive attitude and professional mannerism. Discuss the ethical principles and decision-making required in the healthcare environment. We emphasize the duties and responsibilities of AHPs in the medical practice setting. As well as the importance of being a team player with the client.
Medical Transcription: This course will give you first-hand experience in transcribing reports. We will also work on your computer skills, critical thinking, listening, time management and writing skills. This will allow you to improve your accuracy in transcribing reports.
Unit Clerk Fundamentals: This course highlights the vital administrative role of the Unit Clerk in a hospital setting. We explain the structure and departments of the hospital. As well as the convenience of using computers in a hospital settings. Practice digital charts and computerized physician order entry. We cover hospital documentation and focus on the order entry process. You will learn about the role of the unit clerk in admissions, registration, transfers, and discharges. We explain the administrative steps for preparing a patient for surgery, procedures, and investigations. Reinforce the importance of maintaining confidentiality. We discuss orders related to IV therapy, cardiovascular diseases, nutrition, digestion, and excretion.
Job Search and Resume Writing: This course is designed to guide students through the process of job searching and resume writing. The course will cover various methods of finding job opportunities, including online job boards, networking, and informational interviews. Students will learn how to create a professional resume that effectively showcases their skills and experiences to potential employers. You will to write an effective cover letter that grabs the attention of recruiters and hiring managers.
